Every recent survey places Yes narrowly ahead, so restarting Iceland’s EU negotiations is likely.

The referendum is likely to pass because Yes has led across the latest surveys and voters are deciding only whether to negotiate, not whether to join the EU. That lower-stakes choice gives cautious voters another opportunity to reject any eventual agreement. The race remains vulnerable to a late reversal because recent leads are small, have narrowed, and sit within survey uncertainty, while fisheries and sovereignty give No a powerful closing argument.

Points to YES

Yes has maintained a small lead across successive surveys, making a narrow victory more plausible even though no individual lead is decisive.
Maskína’s August 21–25 survey placed Yes ahead, as did its June, late-July and August 13 surveys.
The ballot’s limited scope lowers the immediate cost of voting Yes because voters retain a later veto over actual EU membership.
On August 26, the published ballot question asked only whether Iceland should resume accession negotiations, with any treaty requiring another Icelandic referendum.
Economic concerns provide Yes with a practical appeal beyond European identity, potentially helping it consolidate support during the closing campaign.
On August 26, Yes supporters argued that closer European ties and eventual euro adoption could reduce currency volatility and living costs amid high Icelandic interest rates and prices.

Points to NO

Support for Yes has been narrowing, increasing the chance that late movement or ordinary polling error produces a No majority.
Maskína’s August 21–25 survey showed the Yes–No gap contracting from earlier August and June readings, while the reported changes remained within the margin of error.
Fisheries and sovereignty give No a concentrated closing message that could mobilize resistant voters and sway undecided Icelanders.
On August 26, opponents emphasized control over fishing grounds, and the No campaign’s leader vowed that Iceland’s waters would never be shared.
