Broad private hiring and economist estimates remain above the threshold, so a September U.S. payroll gain exceeding 50,000 is likely.

Most current evidence points above the threshold: private payrolls expanded, business surveys showed accelerating hiring, claims remained low, and economist estimates clustered comfortably above 50,000. The main risks are weaker job openings, deteriorating consumer confidence, and an expected reversal of August’s unusually large education and restaurant gains. ADP also measures private employment differently from the official payroll report and has tracked it poorly at times. Together, these risks leave meaningful uncertainty around an outcome that remains more likely than a gain of 50,000 or less.

Points to YES

ADP’s September private-payroll gain provides direct evidence that hiring remained above the market threshold, although it does not measure total nonfarm payrolls.
On September 30, ADP reported that private-sector employment increased by 90,000 in September.
Economist estimates cluster well above 50,000, indicating that a substantial slowdown from August can occur without missing the threshold.
On September 30, a Reuters survey showed an expected September nonfarm-payroll increase of 90,000.
September business surveys showed unusually broad hiring acceleration across manufacturing and services.
On September 24, S&P Global’s flash survey showed factory employment rising at its fastest pace in more than five years and combined hiring at its fastest pace since June 2022.

Points to NO

Labor demand softened before September, increasing the risk that hiring fell close to the threshold.
On September 29, August job openings were reported down by 256,000 to 7.079 million.
August’s strongest sector gains appear difficult to repeat, creating a meaningful drag on September payroll growth.
On September 29, local government education and restaurants were reported to have contributed more than 100,000 of August’s job gains.
