Washington has shifted toward economic pressure despite stalled diplomacy.

Washington is currently tolerating Iranian pressure on commercial shipping while emphasizing sanctions and the blockade, suggesting a relatively high threshold for renewed strikes. That restraint competes with collapsed negotiations, an unresolved war, Iran’s harder military posture and substantial U.S. forces nearby. Continued economic coercion could preserve the strike-free period, but a fresh attack on U.S. personnel or strategically important shipping could quickly produce a qualifying retaliatory strike, leaving the outcome about even with a slight lean toward renewed action.

Points to NO

The collapse of the negotiating track removes a key barrier to escalation and leaves no agreed process for containing future incidents.
On August 21, CNN reported that Trump had instructed his envoys to halt conversations with Tehran after the negotiating window expired without a path to end the war.
Iran’s shift toward a more aggressive posture increases the chance of a provocation that draws direct U.S. retaliation against Iranian territory.
In a report published August 19, an Iranian official said Iran was moving to a fully offensive military posture because diplomacy had stalled.
A major U.S. carrier presence keeps a rapid strike option available, shortening the path from a triggering incident to military action.
On August 20, the George Washington Carrier Strike Group was operating in the Middle East after arriving in the regional command theater during a scheduled deployment.

Points to YES

Washington’s turn toward economic pressure reduces the immediate need for strikes and supports extending the current pause through the deadline.
On August 20, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said the planned economic-pressure campaign was intended to minimize the need for a large-scale kinetic restart.
U.S. restraint despite repeated attacks on commercial shipping indicates a higher retaliation threshold, making continued restraint more plausible.
As of August 19, U.S. Central Command had announced no military response to nearly two weeks of escalating attacks on commercial shipping, and the last reported U.S. strike on Iranian targets was July 29.
Renewed regional mediation offers a route to manage navigation disputes and prevent incidents from escalating into direct U.S. strikes.
On August 21, the Iranian and Omani foreign ministers discussed creating suitable conditions for renewed dialogue and developments affecting navigation in the Strait of Hormuz.
