Katsanidou's incumbency and unanimous Social Democratic renomination give her a strong continuity advantage, so her formal return as chair is likely.

Katsanidou enters the election as the incumbent, her party's unequivocal nominee and the leader of the council's largest party after the previous election. The Social Democrats also have a demonstrated path to power through their governing partnership with the Centre and Left parties. Continuity is therefore likely but not secure: that coalition began with the narrowest possible majority, the current election is unusually close, and governing partners will be chosen only after votes are counted.

Points to YES

Katsanidou holds the office and is the Social Democrats' designated candidate to retain it.
On September 7, 2026, the incumbent regional board chair was identified as the Social Democrats' candidate for the post after the election.
Unified party support reduces the risk of an internal succession contest.
On April 18, 2026, the Social Democrats' Kalmar County district congress unanimously endorsed Katsanidou as its candidate for regional board chair.
The previous governing coalition provides a tested route to another council majority.
After the 2022 election, the Social Democrats formed a majority with the Centre and Left parties, together holding 35 of 67 council seats.

Points to NO

Post-election coalition choices remain unsettled, leaving Katsanidou without a declared governing majority.
On September 7, 2026, the Social Democrats' regional manifesto gave no preferred governing partners and left that decision to post-election negotiations.
An unusually competitive election creates a credible path to a change in regional control.
On September 4, 2026, Barometern reported from its large Novus poll that the election was closer than at any time in more than three decades.
