Morales leads the newest public poll and some private surveys, so his winning the Providence Democratic mayoral nomination is highly likely.

The newest public poll gives Morales a clear lead, while reports of private surveys and his large donor network point in the same direction. Smiley remains a formidable incumbent with more money, the party committee’s endorsement, and prominent allies. The highly likely assessment rests on the convergence of the latest indicators, although sparse and conflicting public polling leaves meaningful uncertainty.

Points to YES

The newest public poll places Morales clearly ahead of Smiley.
An August 19–20 survey of likely Democratic primary voters found Morales at 48%, Smiley at 38%, and 13% undecided.
Private polling reportedly corroborates Morales’s lead.
As of September 2, some private surveys showed Morales ahead.
Morales has built a much broader small-donor network than Smiley.
By August 20, Morales had attracted 3,241 unique donors since June 2025, compared with 1,231 for Smiley.

Points to NO

Smiley holds major incumbent and financial advantages.
By August 20, Smiley had raised more than $1.1 million since June 2025, compared with more than $485,000 for Morales.
Smiley has the local Democratic establishment and prominent endorsers behind him.
As of September 2, Smiley had support from the Providence Democratic City Committee, Attorney General Peter Neronha, Gina Raimondo, and Pete Buttigieg.
The strongest public poll for Morales has material sponsorship and sampling caveats.
The August 19–20 survey was commissioned by a group led by Morales endorser Jorge Elorza and had a 5.56-point margin of error.
